Could The Justice Society Be DC’s Avengers?

Last-Days-of-the-Justice-Society-feature-300x156 Could The Justice Society Be DC's Avengers?Let’s face it, 2017’s Justice League was bad. It has been nearly 3 years now, and I think we can all agree that the movie just… wasn’t what it should have been. What made the film even worse, I might add, was seeing the respective critical and commercial success of Avengers: Infinity Warless than a year later. DC and Warner Bros. rushed the Justice League, forcing them to assemble in a losing race. However, with the Justice League (for the time being at least) being brushed aside, could the Justice Society be DC’s Avengers?

For a while now, Dwayne ‘the Rock’ Johnson has been working on a Black Adam movie. A few weeks ago, before the Coronavirus put the world in shut down, the actor confirmed that the movie’s production was set to begin later in the year, with casting announcements imminent. In November of last year, it was widely reported that the Justice Society of America would be featured heavily in the movie. A few days ago, it was reported that two different versions of the Justice Society will appear in the forthcoming Black Adam movie. One of these teams will be set in the past, with the other being established in the present day. The team of the past is rumored to consist of: A younger version of the Wizard Shazam, Hawkman & Hawkgirl, Doctor Fate, Jay Garrick, and Alan Scott. Meanwhile, the contemporary iteration of the JSA will apparently consist of Hawkman & Hawkgirl, Doctor Fate, Atom Smasher, and Cyclone.

Could The Justice Society Be DC’s Avengers?

With the Black Adam movie focusing so heavily on the JSA, could DC and Warner Bros find a way to make these characters their response to Marvel’s Avengers? As Marvel proved with Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor, you do not need iconic A-listers like Spider-Man or Wolverine to make billions of dollars, all you need are great characters, played by tremendously talented actors.

In recent years, DC has been paying a lot of attention to the JSA. The characters heavily featured in last year’s Doomsday Clock, a crossover between the mainstream DC Universe and the characters of Watchmen. Furthermore, the JSA will appear in the upcoming Stargirl show on DC’s streaming service. It is very obvious to me that DC is trying to tease the audience, and get us familiar with these characters.

With the Avengers, Marvel was always stuck with telling stories set in the present day. However, if this rumor regarding Black Adam turns out to be true, we could see a Justice Society movie set in the 1940s. DC could utilize the period piece structure and tell a variety of different stories, spanning decades with numerous colorful and unique characters. Instead of challenging Marvel in a race that is basically over, DC could go a new route. This could also be a way of allowing directors like Matt Reeves to make their standalone films without the added pressure of building a cinematic universe.

For me, DC has a goldmine here, and I really hope they see the pure potential of these characters and the world they are building. No matter what happens, the Justice Society are coming to the big screen, so if there were ever a time to splash a few thousands of dollars on All Star Comics #3, I would say that time is now.

I don’t know…I just don’t trust the folks at DC to get their stuff together. They have shown time and again that they can make dog food out of grade A stuff.
