Black Adam may be leading us to a Justice League reunion and much more.

WARNING: POSSIBLE SPOILERS FOR BLACK ADAM.

If you felt a disturbance in the superhero cinema Force, don’t be alarmed; that’s just the epic news that Henry Cavill will play Superman in Black Adam

This week, Dwayne Johnson, without actually saying the names “Cavill” or “Superman,” pretty much confirmed that the Man of Steel is part of DC’s latest blockbuster. The people did rejoice, but there could be more to this story in the long run.

There is a much bigger picture at work here.

If Cavill is indeed returning to the DCEU, then it will have been a long time coming for Superman fans. It also should give some hope to those Snyder-verse supporters still clinging to the hope that the director’s DCEU vision is still alive.

The official word from WarnerMedia—in the pre-Discovery days, anyway—was that Zack Snyder’s shared universe got its swan song when his version of Justice League was released on HBO Max last year. However, Joss Whedon’s 2017 Justice League bombed so hard that it was supposed to have been the end of things, so fans have learned to be skeptical where Warner Bros. is concerned. Plus there are new bosses in charge thanks to Discovery, so Snyer supporters are crossing their fingers.

Putting Cavill back into the Superman role does not automatically reinstate the Snyder-verse. What it does confirm is that the director’s influence is still widely felt across the DCEU. After the ‘17 JL film put the entire DCEU on the chopping block, Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman and Jason Momoa’s Aquaman kept the ship afloat with their hit solo movies.

Despite publicly hanging up his cape and cowl, Ben Affleck is returning as Batman for Aquaman 2, and his Dark Knight was also prominently featured in the Shazam: Fury of the Gods trailer. Let us not forget that he will be part of The Flash along with fellow Batman actor Michael Keaton.

Speaking of The Flash, embattled star Ezra Miller is still the DCEU’s official Scarlet Speedster. With all the actor’s recent troubles, which number far too many to list here, the gossip was that WB was looking to recast his scenes with someone new, possibly The CW’s Flash, Grant Gustin. However, it appears the new bosses at WarnerMedia are sticking with Miller, which further fuels speculation that a Snyder-verse JL reunion is coming. All we need now is Ray Fisher to return to his Cyborg role, and we’ve got the whole gang.

Justice League v. The Suicide Squad?

Before the possible Cavill-Superman return, fans took Peacemaker’s season finale cameo as the biggest clue pointing at a JL reunion. The final battle with the invading “butterflies” saw the Justice League, sans Cyborg, arrive a bit too late.

With Viola Davis reprising her role as Amanda Waller, it would seem that Cavill’s involvement is the latest indicator that Black Adam is a sort of jumping-on point for the future DCEU. Between Peacemaker’s JL cameo and Waller’s latest appearance, the film is clearly tying the strings between the Snyder-verse and James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad

Connecting the JL to Suicide Squad has intriguing possibilities written all over it. It could easily lead to what would be the greatest thing to come out of the DCEU: a Justice League versus the Suicide Squad movie. There's already a game on the way, but a feature film is a different ballgame entirely. Of course, this only works if James Gunn is behind the camera, and it’s R-rated.

In fact, that idea may have been in the works when Gunn penned his DC scripts. After all, The Suicide Squad makes plenty of JL references, meaning it clearly exists in the Snyder-verse continuity. Throw in Peacemaker’s NSFW and hilarious Superman, Batman, and especially Aquaman jokes, and you’ve got the makings of a potential blockbuster film that would give Deadpool a run atop his inappropriate action-comedy mountain.

Keep up with all the latest!
