IDW Publishing is issuing six standalone issues adapted from Doctorow's work

San Diego, CA (September 24, 2007)Cory Doctorow is known for many things: He is an activist; an award-winning science fiction writer; a public speaker; and a founding co-editor of BoingBoing.net, a cutting-edge, high-traffic weblog about technology, culture and politics. He's on the masthead of publications like Wired, Popular Science and MAKE, Information Week, Locus, The Guardian and the CBC's SearchEngine, and freelances for the likes of the New York Times, Radar, Forbes and Salon.com. But, this month, Doctorow's accomplishments take on an entirely new form: comic books.

IDW Publishing is releasing monthly adaptations of six of Doctorow's short stories chosen by Doctorow himself as his favorites. Coming together as Cory Doctorow's Futuristic Tales of the Here and Now, a different creative team is adapting each issue in the series, with the art tailored to fit each story's tone and style.

"Doctorow is an extraordinary storyteller and the comic book medium is a natural crossover to bring visual life to his fantastical tales," says Chris Ryall, IDW Publishing's Publisher and Editor-in-Chief.

Up first in the series is Cory Doctorow's Futuristic Tales of the Here and Now #1, with an adaptation of Anda's Game. For 12-year-old Anda, getting paid real money to kill the characters of players who were cheating in her favorite online computer game was a win-win situation until she found out who was paying her and what those characters meant to the livelihood of children around the world. Award-winning artist Sam Kieth, who is known for his work on projects such as Marvel's Wolverine and the current DC Comics series Batman/Lobo, provides the debut issue's cover, which will be released to comic book stores on October 17. Dara Naraghi, whose own Lifelike book will be released by IDW later this year, is the writer of the adaptation and Esteve Polls is the artist.

Cory Doctorow's Futuristic Tales of the Here and Now #2 is based on Doctorow's When Sysadmins Ruled the Earth, winner of the Locus Award, which honors science fiction and fantasy writing, for best novelette of 2006. This story asks the question of who will keep the computers online when the end of the world comes. With a cover by Scott Morse, who is known for work such as Magic Pickle for Oni Press and IDW's own Little Book of Horror: Frankenstein, the adaptation is written by J.C. Vaughn and art is by Daniel Warner.

Other Doctorow tales to be adapted include Craphound, about a man who gets along with an alien better than with most humans, and Nimby and the D-Hoppers, which tells about a non-technocratic society shattered by the arrival of fully automatic, laser-guided dimension hoppers.
