September Mega Concert Poster Auction at Psychedelic Art Exchange

Through LiveAuctioneers, Psychedelic Art Exchange is launching its September Mega Sale, which showcases over 250 lots of authentic concert posters and related items. This auction has no reserve and all lots start at $1.

While this auction features tons of solid entries, here are a few worth keeping an eye on.

1968 Jimi Hendrix Martin Sharp / Big O Poster - This poster is instantly recognizable to collectors, as it is the "most desirable and sought-after poster of the entire Big O series."

Martin Sharp's artwork is based on a Linda McCartney photograph taken of Hendrix while he performed at the Rheingold Festival in Central Park in 1967. “He traced Hendrix from a photograph by Linda Eastman (later McCartney), and splattered it with colour paint in the style of Jackson Pollock.” (The Telegraph, 2013).

This item is 100% original with no restoration and has achieved a grade of MINT 91. The current high bid for this poster is $1,500, which is already within the range of the estimated sales value of $1,500-$3,500.

1967 Velvet Underground The Boston Tea Party Handbill - This handbill, graded MINT 91, was designed by artist D. Arthur Hahn for the Velvet Underground's June 1967 appearance at the Boston Tea Party in Boston, MA.

The band was still managed by Andy Warhol at the time and had just released their first album, which was produced by Warhol in the spring of 1966.  Warhol had influenced the band by adding singer Nico to the group and also gave the band artistic freedom to record what they wanted without usual record label commercial constraints, an abnormality in the business.

This piece has a current high bid of $1,200 after 6 bids and has an estimated value of $1,500 -$3,500.

1967 Grateful Dead South Lake Tahoe Poster - This is a particularly unique listing, as it is a very rare discovery from the early days of Grateful Dead history. This one-color, screen-printed cardboard poster advertises a 1967 Grateful Dead Concert in South Lake Tahoe on July 28 & 29 1967.

From PAE; "The discovery of this poster has presented us with a small mystery. The dates on the poster are do not appear in any of the available data from the band’s treasury of live performances. The consigner of this poster clearly remembers seeing the Dead play at the Legion Hall in ‘67.  However, memory being what it is, the exact dates cannot be recalled.

7/28 & 29 1967 are not captured in the Grateful Dead’s available known archives. The poster is an original authentic advertisement, so the only remaining question is, Did these shows happen on these dates, or were they rescheduled for August 19th? Generally, recordings from the band’s extensive archive help verify dates played on posters. There are no known recordings from this venue on these dates."

The poster has only had one owner, the original person who obtained the poster back in 1967.  PAE has identified one other existing copy of the poster. It has a grade of EXCELLENT 71.

Currently, this piece rests on a high bid of $1,000, though it is valued to settle for between $3,500-$7,500.

This auction opens for live bidding on Sep 23rd. Take a look at all the entries in this auction HERE, and let us know what you'll be bidding on in the comments!

Classic Poster Auctions: SEPTEMBER 2021 SELECT SALE (#62)

CPA has a wide selection of rock ’n’ roll posters from shows that took place mainly in San Francisco, California during the 60s and early 70s. Worth a watch:

AOR 2.188 SAN FRANCISCO STATE ACID TEST POSTER - "This three-day acid test was the last legal acid test held. It took place on September 30 and October 1-2, 1966 - less than a week prior to LSD becoming illegal. It was a memorable event with the Grateful Dead headlining the shows, backed up by Mimi Farina, Congress of Wonders, The Only Alternative, and others. Ken Kesey was walking around the campus, despite the fact that he was a fugitive who had been living in Mexico. The Dead played in the ballroom and Kesey broadcast on a makeshift campus radio station that the Pranksters had assembled.

These posters were produced for on-campus use; only a very small quantity was printed, and few have survived. Two types exist: one with a sticker that announces the bands and one without. We know of roughly five posters without the sticker and only three with it. Of these posters, this is one of the finer examples and it is the epitome of a trophy piece. We last sold this poster in our March 2018 auction, where it brought $17,825." - Written by Concert Poster Auctions.

The high bid on this piece is currently $8,000 after 26 bids. The final sales price is estimated to land between $12,500 - $25,000.

AOR 2.163 BERRY DROPPER POSTER "This Steve Catron-designed poster advertised a three-day show in March 1968. Because The Carousel Ballroom was a small venue, not many of these posters were printed. The combination of rarity and popularity makes this a very difficult poster to find in nice condition.

Numerous sales records of more than $5,000 are noted for this poster, including the example sold in our October 2012 auction that realized $7,700. Additionally, a piece that realized $5,750 sold in our September 2018 sale. " - Concert Poster Auctions.

Currently, the high bid for this piece rests at $4,100 after 16 bids. The poster is estimated to land between $3,000 - $6,000.

SIGNED ORIGINAL FD-7 EUPHORIA POSTER - CGC graded 7.0 - "Known simply as “Euphoria,” this rare poster had a press run of fewer than 500 copies for both versions of the original. This is one of the toughest Family Dog posters to find in top condition and most collections contain a second or third print.

The image advertised “An Air Conditioned Dance-Concert” and has a central image of a wildly dancing bearded man surrounded by a fern-like design. Original posters come in two types; a black and white version and one with the addition of green as offered here. Both are quite rare and seldom as nice as the example offered in this lot." - Concert Poster Auctions.

This piece is resting at $2,700 after 12 bids with 5 days to go. It has an estimated worth of  $5,000 - $10,000.

This auction opened 09/16/2021 and begins closing on  09/26/2021 at 6pm MDT. Check out all the entries HERE.
