LiveAuctioneers Auctions Several Raw Concert Posters

A large selection of ungraded, vintage, psychedelic rock n' roll posters came to auction last week. Did you make any scores?

The Grateful Dead took the top spot of highest earner in this one, with their 'Blue Rose' Signed Proof selling for $1,500. The sales price for this piece exceeded expectations, which had been set between $500 and $1000, and it's not hard to see why.  Alton Kelley and Stanley Mouse's poster advertised the last show held at Winterland (1978).

This performance also featured a rare appearance by John Belushi and The Blues Brothers, appearing with the Grateful Dead and New Riders of the Purple Sage. This show was so epic that breakfast was even served afterward. Have you ever been to a show like that?

This lot is an original proof sheet that is missing the black ink pass, which makes for a different look than usual. This proof sheet has been signed in the lower right corner by icons Stanley Mouse, Alton Kelley, Levon Mosgofian, and a mystery fourth person whose signature cannot be identified.

The second-highest earner in this auction was an original FD-3 Paul Butterfield Poster, designed by Chet Helms and Wes Wilson. This piece sold for $1000 after being estimated to hit between $350 and $700.

This 1966 early Family Dog poster is simply known as “Paul Butterfield,” and is extremely rare. The image at the center of this poster is a photograph of Bernard McFadden, a well-known health food and fasting advocate from the 1920s. As with the first two Family Dog posters, the press run on this was very small-probably around 500.

This is an original printing of the FD-3 poster. While it does have obvious condition issues, (the white margin has been trimmed off and there is green Day-Glo paint in the "S" of "Blues"), it is still very rare and in great shape despite the flaws.

Rounding off our top three highest earners is a signed 2017 TRPS Festival Benefit Poster, which brought in a whopping $950 after being only estimated to hit between $200 and $400.

This silkscreen piece by Chuck Sperry isn't as old as several of its other auction-mates, making its sale price all the more impressive.

The event took place on October 28, 2017, at The Hall Of Flowers in Golden Gate Park - San Francisco, CA. This seven-color original silkscreen is done in metallic ink and is part of a limited edition of 200 posters. Signed and numbered 97/200 by Chuck Sperry.

With the ability to command a price like that, one can only speculate what this piece will be worth in the future.

Several more pieces were auctioned, each with its own set of interesting results. It's no secret that concert poster collecting is poised to spring. Check out all the auction results HERE.

Original Postcards and Handbills for Sale at the Psychedelic Art Exchange

PAE is offering CGC graded gems from the Handbill and Postcard printing category up for sale. While often just as--if not more rare than their poster equivalents, these smaller relics preserve the same beautiful artwork of the 60s. Featuring artwork from the posters of Bill Graham, Family Dog, and the early psychedelic rock movement, supplies are limited.

There are several items already listed, but here are a couple to keep your eye on:

Firstly, there's a BG 171 Grateful Dead Jefferson Airplane Cold Blood Winterland Fillmore Poster with an opening bid listed at $350.  This is an original 1st printing (slate-blue background, no "W") 14&1/8 x 21" concert poster for Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead appearing with Mongo Santamaria at Winterland from 5/2-3/1969, plus Mongo Santamaria headlining over Cold Blood and the Elvin Bishop Group at the Fillmore West on 5/1 & 5/4/1969. (*all shows held in San Francisco)

This medium glossy-coated index stock poster is in excellent (B+) condition with just a few thin edge creases along the lower left margin, along with a stray pinch ding/fingerprint/thin surface scratch or two hiding within the image area. There are a couple of slightly bumped corner-tips and a couple of tiny edge dings along the right margin, but the condition is otherwise fine.  With art by Randy Tuten, the image is # 171 in the Bill Graham/Fillmore series.

Next, I'd watch the BG 226 Jethro Tull Manfred Mann David Singer 1970 Fillmore West Concert Poster, featured in this auction with an opening bid of $250.

This is an original 1st printing concert poster for Jethro Tull appearing with Manfred Mann's Chapter Three, Bessie Jones and the Georgia Sea Island Singers and Clouds at the Fillmore West in San Francisco, CA on 4/2-5/1970. (*Tull canceled). Art is by David Singer; the image is #226 in the Bill Graham/Fillmore series.

This medium glossy-coated index stock poster is listed in excellent (B+) condition; there are a couple of VERY soft horizontal roll creases along the upper left side of the poster.
