 2021 November 6 Entertainment & Music Memorabilia Signature® Auction #7262 at Heritage

Heritage's upcoming Entertainment & Music Memorabilia auction features several graded and ungraded concert posters worth catching collectors' eyes. Here are a couple worth taking a look over if you're looking to add an iconic poster or two to your collection.

The Beatles 1966 Genuine Shea Stadium NY Concert Poster: From Heritage's description; "We're talking, of course, about the most coveted poster in the entire hobby, and one of the most famous collectibles in any hobby: The Beatles 1966 Shea Stadium, New York original advertising concert poster, printed weeks before the show to goose sales for a concert that clearly wasn't selling out. Up until two years ago, only 4-5 were known to exist in elite collections."

This piece was brought to auction by the family of the original owner. Other copies of this more-than-iconic poster have crossed the auction block before.  Individual copies sold in November 2019 for $125,000, in April 2020 for a world-record price of $137,500, and in November 2020 for $106,250.

Nirvana / Mudhoney 1991 Fox Theatre Concert Poster Signed by Designer Mike King: This 1991 poster was plastered around the city to advertise this show that occurred one month after the release of Nirvana’s album “Nevermind”. This is part of the Ultrasounds Collection, which was created in very small quantities and has low survival rates.  This particular poster had a print run of only 600, and the show was said to be sold out before they were even posted.

This item is signed by designer Mike King on verso and is classified in Near Mint condition. (The "another cool band" on the bill? It ended up being a band called Sprinkler.)

Rock Posters & Collectibles Artist Signed October Auction #5

This auction offers something from everyone from CGC graded and certified posters signed by the likes of Stanley Mouse, Alton Kelly, and Randy Tuten to the rawest signed posters and postcards.

Up for bids is a Stanley Mouse signed BG-110 Cream 1968 Fillmore Auditorium poster in Very Good condition, despite tack holes and much toning on almost 50% of the right side of the poster.

Currently, this entry is resting on a high bid of $136 after 11 bids.

Also available is a CGC Graded 9.6 AOR-2.170 - Tuesday Night Jam 1968 poster also signed by Stanley Mouse.  Advertising a show in the Carousel Ballroom, Mouse used gold ink to sign in the lower righthand corner.

The high bid for this piece is $179 after 10 bids.

This auction opened for bidding on Saturday, October 9th, and begins closing on Sunday, October 17th, 2021, at 5 PM PST. Take a look at all the concert posters up for bids HERE.

Bonhams' Music Auction

Bonhams' Music Auction features memorabilia, including concert posters, from a wide range of musicians. Be sure to take a look at all the items; here are a few to get you started.

Pink Floyd Concert Poster: This 1967 poster was created for the UFO Club, a famous but short-lived underground London club in the late 60s. It was designed by Hapshash and the Coloured Coat, a creative duo consisting of Michael English and Nigel Waymouth. This piece has an estimated value of $700 - $900.

We've also got a Jerry Lee Lewis Concert Poster, 1958. From Bonhams, "Jerry Lee Lewis was primed and ready to conquer England upon his arrival there in May 1958. It all blew up when the press discovered that Lewis had married his first cousin's teenaged daughter. The controversy that followed forced the tour to shut down after three dates. The performance at Sheffield never occurred but this vivid poster is an incredible relic of what could have been."

This piece has an estimated value between $2,000 and $3,000.

Available for bidding is an uncut proofsheet for FD-50 (The Doors) signed by Victor Moscoso. Once a poster printing was created, all parts involved in the poster's creation were bound together with the uncut proof sheet taped on top. This is the reference proof that was taped to the parts for FD-50.

This entry is estimated to close between $2,500 and $3,000.

This auction opens for bidding on October 28th. See all the entries HERE.

Concert Poster Auction Results

Psychedelic Art Exchange's October CGC Sale Closes

CGC concert poster auctions are few and far between. PAE's Auction #141 closed on Sun, Oct 10. This was the first auction on LiveAuctioneers to offer exclusively CGC graded concert posters, handbills, and postcards. Here are the top three highest earners in the latest list of results from PAE.

This is one of the most iconic posters of the age and needs little explanation as to why it would be the highest earner at auction. A signed 1966 FD-26 Grateful Dead Avalon Poster in grade CGC 9.2 brought in $30,000 at auction close. This is slightly underwhelming, as it was valued between $35,000 and $70,000, but it's nothing to sneeze at for an instantly recognizable piece.

A 1968 AOR-2.172 Grateful Dead Carousel Poster graded CGC 8.5 sold for $3,750 after being estimated to land between $3,000 - $5,000.  What do you do if you're asked to create a poster that stuck out like a "Sore Thumb"? If you're artist Alton Kelley, then you create this. This 1968 Jefferson Airplane Grateful Dead poster was produced for a concert at the Carousel Ballroom in San Francisco. Fewer than 500 of these posters were printed.

The third-place finisher is one that exceeded expectations. A 1969 AOR-3.116 Grateful Dead Honolulu Handbill graded CGC 9.4 brought in $3,250 after being estimated to land between $1,500 and $3,000.

This handbill was created by Rick Griffin and its original poster is one of the most difficult Grateful Dead collectibles to find in any condition.
