Marvel (and to a lesser extent, DC) unleashed a torrent of news about upcoming releases at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC). But are these good investments? Here are a few comics that spiked both in terms of sales volume and increase in market value after SDCC that I would NOT invest in.

Uncanny X-Men #200

This book continues to sell after Marvel revealed that Magneto would wear this costume in its X-Men '97 animated series. For instance, just today (July 30th) alone, ten copies sold on eBay. One of those, a CGC 9.8 copy, sold for $189. This surprises me.

First, it's just a costume. Second, it's an animated series and not live-action. Third, the issue doesn't contain any notable first appearances. I'd argue it's not even considered a classic storyline. I'd definitely avoid this issue as I don't believe it has any long-term value.

Secret Wars #1 (2015)

This book started to heat up a few months ago when Mr. Fantastic used the word "incursion" in Dr. Strange: Multiverse of madness. Back in early May, a CGC 9.8 copy sold for $199. Just a few days ago, a seller who had listed a 9.8 for $399 accepted a best offer. While we may not know what it exactly sold for, I wouldn't be surprised if it sold for at least $300 or more.

I'd avoid investing in this book. Just six to eight months ago, in late 2021, CGC 9.8s sold in the $55 to $75 range, and raw copies sold for around $5. To me, this book is comparable to Age of Ultron #1. Like Secret Wars, Age of Ultron was a limited crossover series published in the 2010s that was loosely adapted into a major Avengers film.

An extremely rare CGC 9.9 sold for only $100 a couple of weeks ago on eBay. I predict that the value of Secret Wars #1 will also plummet over the long-term especially as more 9.8s appear on the CGC census.

Daredevil #227

Among the many announcements at Hall H, Daredevil: Born Again drew some of the loudest cheers when fans heard this show would consist of a whopping 18 episodes. Shortly thereafter, Daredevil #227, which kicks off the "Born Again" storyline in the comics, jumped in value. Shockingly, a CGC 9.8 copy of this book sold for a record high of $635 on July 29th on eBay. Just 15 months ago, this same book sold for $68 on eBay. That's a nearly 1000% increase in value.

Although "Born Again" is a classic storyline, there's a reason why a NM/MT copy of this book only sold for $68 35 years after its publication. The issue doesn't contain any notable "firsts" -- a first cameo, a first full appearance, a first crossover, a first in an ongoing series or the debut of a classic costume. In other words, I don't think most investors consider this a "key" issue. I'm guessing this book will come crashing back down to earth in six months ($200 or less).
