It was a rollercoaster of a week in the Hottest Comics rankings. When Carnage’s first appearance drops out of the top 10, you are in for a wild ride. Here are some cold comics to review.

THIS WEEK'S COLD COMICS

Every week, the Hottest Comics list gets updated and we get to see the new rankings compared to the week before. Yesterday we talked about some of the biggest and more notable ones that moved up the list. Today, we look at the ones who moved down and turned into cold comics.

15. AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #361 (-13)

Cold ComicsIf anything should grab your attention in this week’s Hottest Comics, it is this.

ASM #361 is a weekly favorite among collectors, and it has been that way for years. There is no dethroning the first full appearance of Venom as the single best-selling comic week after week, but the first appearance of Carnage is a worthy contender. Seeing it drop outside the top 10 is significant.

The logical question, then, is why has it fallen? The top-10 Hottest Comics has seen plenty of movement in recent weeks. There are new faces joining the ranks, and my inclination is that something had to go in order to make room.

The other factor I see is the price. ASM #361’s fair market value keeps climbing every month. A 9.8 recently sold for $620 and has a 90-day FMV of $574, which is almost $200 above its 2019 average. The fact is this comic could have been simply too expensive for buyers, at least for one week, when there are other popular options.

20. ETERNALS #1 (-14)

Cold ComicsAnother major change in the top 10 was the Eternals #1 falling from sixth all the way to 20th. Last week, it stormed nearly into the top five on the heels of the Marvel Legends reveal of Kro. The team’s Deviant antagonist’s inclusion in the film has many fans thinking he will be the main villain for The Eternals, and that helped push the issue high on the Hottest Comics list. However, that has not been enough to keep it riding in the top 10. Like ASM #361, this also could be a result of the issue’s inflated prices. Naturally, the high prices will result in fewer buyers.

61. NEW MUTANTS #98 (-56)

I have mentioned before that collectors have a tumultuous relationship with Deadpool and his first appearance. Week to week, it is one of the most inconsistent comics on the market, and this is the best example yet. Only seven days ago, this issue rekindled the romance and pulled itself back into the top-five Hottest Comics. Here we are a week later, and it has fallen not just out of the top 10, but out of the top 60. Like that bad relationship, Deadpool will redeem himself in the coming weeks, and New Mutants #98 will be a favorite again.

149. NEW MUTANTS #87 (-113)

Could this have anything to do with comic fans missing the classic Cable?

This issue has not been hot since Deadpool 2 was released in theaters two years ago. Despite the movie and Josh Brolin’s turn as Cable being received favorably, New Mutants #87 has cooled since then. Seeing it fall out of the Hot 100 is another matter.

Why did it drop by over 100 spots? That could be due to teenage Cable. Comic fans notoriously cling to nostalgia, and it could be that they are not thrilled with the older, Arnold-esque Cable having been supplanted by Kid Cable.

196. SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN #1 (-156)

In recent months, this has been the independent comic to du jour. As I have speculated before, it is not uncommon for investors to buy up a hot indy comic with the hope that it will become the next The Walking Dead. That inflates prices that eventually plateau. Such is the case with this comic. Now that the new-comic smell has worn off the series with no word of a production company optioning it for a film or show, speculators are holding onto their dollars a bit tighter.
