Are you a Pulp collector? ComicConnect’s Amazing Pulp Auction offers a showcase of some iconic books that influenced much of the material we know and love today. Take a look!

The Pulp Influence

Pulps are the forerunner of all contemporary genre fiction and art, including superheroes, fantasy, horror and sci-fi. Art, writing, and serialized storytelling combined to form the fantastic medium of pulps. Properties like Star Trek and Star Wars owe a massive debt to sci-fi pulps like Amazing Stories, Fantastic Adventures, and Unknown.

As well, characters like Batman and Superman were ripped straight from pulp heroes like The Shadow, Doc Savage, Operator #5, and The Avenger. Vincent Zurzolo, COO of the Auction House, said “It’s amazing seeing where so much of pop-culture comes from.”

Pulp Fiction

Pulps marketed themselves to children and adults alike, containing material not often seen in mainstream comics until the end of the 20th century. Many pulps include strange, violent, and lurid covers and interior illustrations. They often center on damsels in distress, noir heroes, and unusual aliens and monsters. Pulps are prized for their “Good Girl’ art, featuring beautiful women in all kinds of odd genre scenarios.

Featured Items

ComicConnect’s Amazing Pulp Auction contains countless striking pulp covers by artists including Margaret Brundage, Frank R. Paul, J. Allen St. John, and Virgil Finlay. These covers feature scenes from great stories by groundbreaking writers like H.P. Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard, and Edgar Rice Burroughs.

Conan the Barbarian

Robert E. Howard first introduced Conan the Barbarian in “The Phoenix on the Sword” in the pages of the December 1932 Weird Tales, up for auction with ComicConnect.

They also have his second and third appearances in subsequent issues of Weird Tales.

Weird Tales

ComicConnect also has a copy of the very first issue of Weird Tales in this auction. It is a stunning copy of a piece of history. Weird Tales defined horror for much of the 20th Century.

Many of Lovecraft’s great stories were first seen in Weird Tales, like the February 1928 issue featuring “Call of Cthulhu”, the first ever appearance of Cthulhu. Their auction also includes a one-of-a-kind hardcover collecting Weird Tales issues from 1923 and 1924, with many early Lovecraft stories.

Exceptional Quality

Most pulps found today are in very rough shape. They were cheaply made and sold at the time, leading to significant wear on most copies.

This is not true of the vast majority of the pulps in ComicConnect’s Amazing Pulp Auction. They’re selling massive runs of beautifully preserved pulps, in both major and obscure titles. ComicConnect is offering over 2,000 pulp lots at auction with bids starting July 12, 2021, at 12 PM EDT.
