In the 1990s, Sarah Michelle Gellar became a household name thanks to the Buffy the Vampire Slayer television show. For younger fans, Gellar is closely associated with the tough Mystery Inc member, Daphne, from the live-action Scooby-Doo movies. Outside of fighting supernatural bad guys, Gellar is also an avid book collector. In fact, Gellar has an entire room in her home dedicated to books! Gellar has even passed down her love of reading to her children. How? By leading by example! She has also written her own cookbook, with a number of easy recipes anyone can follow.

Some of Gellar's collection includes first-edition prints of Dr. Seuss's books, which can be some of the hardest books to find. As someone who collects old comic books, I understand the challenges behind finding a grail or hard-to-find piece -- but most of us will likely agree that the hunt is as fun as the find itself! If you're thinking of following in her footsteps and starting your own first-edition collection, you're not alone. Let's take a peek at some of the more popular first-edition books collectors go after!

How The Grinch Stole Christmas

He's a mean one, that Mr. Grinch. First released towards the end of 1957, the book would inspire the infamous Chuck Jones and Ben Washam cartoon special from 1966. Years later Jim Carrey would become the Grinch for the live-action adaptation, which is still celebrated 22 years later. How The Grinch Stole Christmas is a holiday staple, and as such first editions can be a great addition to a collection.

In September of 2017, Heritage sold a first edition copy in Good (yet very worn) condition for $400.  Prior to that in 2015, Heritage sold a copy in what appears to be Very Good condition for $1062. Right now you can find the first-edition copy in Good condition from LaCelle Rare Books for $99. While that may not be good news for investment hopefuls, this is great for anyone who just wants to buy one without breaking the bank.

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy

J. R. R. Tolkien's Middle-Earth masterpiece has been enchanting readers since 1954. The series has managed to stay relevant for decades, with The Rings of Power now available to watch on Amazon Prime. The books have been adapted into cartoon specials, video games, comic books, and even pinball machines. First-edition, first-impression printings for the first three novels are very collectible, as only 3,000 were published.

In July of 2022, Heritage sold a first-edition, first-impression set in overall Fine condition for $57,500. In October of 2021, a set in overall Good to Fine condition sold for $34,750. On eBay, a set in what appears to be in Very Good condition sold for $5,860. The seller did note some issues with the books, including possible mold, which could account for the price differences.

Pride and Prejudice

My personal favorite book, Pride and Prejudice was first written between 1796 and 1797 by Jane Austen. The first published trilogy was released in 1813 after Austen passed the copyright off to Thomas Egerton. The book has remained culturally relevant, with certain live-action adaptations of the book being very popular to this day. Finding first editions of this book can be extremely difficult -- and extremely expensive. The novel was originally split into three books, but contemporary printings have it as one complete novel.

In December of 2021, Heritage sold a first edition set in overall Very Good condition for $60,000 -- even with a facsimile title page for the first volume. Currently, hopeful buyers can buy a complete, first-edition set from AbeBooks for $175,000.
