Henry Cavill, whom many might know as Superman or Geralt from The Witcher, is a pretty cool nerd. The popular action star was a big fan of The Witcher, which helped him play Geralt perfectly. As far as collecting goes, Cavill has a healthy Warhammer 40K collection -- which is appropriate, given that he is also working on the new Amazon series based on the popular miniature war game.

During the shutdowns of 2020, Cavill passed his time by painting Warhammer figures and will show them off on his Instagram from time to time.

Cavill has a great eye for detail! Warhammer has been a popular game since its introduction in 1987 by Games Workshop. Warhammer is an expensive game for new and seasoned players -- a decent game setup can cost hundreds of dollars! The game is played around the world, and some of the figures and books have become highly sought-after. It's also important to note that some people do paint figures and sell them online (which I am all for), so we will not be looking at those. Let's take a look at some of the items that collectors hunt from the series.

Black Library Books

The Black Library imprint from Games Workshop is a publication that releases novels, graphic novels, art books, and audiobooks that take you deeper into the world of Warhammer. These books use sets that have been available and can be rather valuable in their own right.

In February of 2023, a limited edition copy of Talon of Horus sold on eBay for $800. In April of 2023, a like-new copy of Mephiston Blood of Sanguinius sold for $369. This book is particularly harder to find, especially in like-new condition. Many leather-bound editions also fetch serious money, so if you see one at a second-hand store or a convention, it may be worth checking out!

Magic The Gathering Universe Beyond Warhammer 40K

It would only make sense that one of the most popular trading card games would team up with Warhammer. The two properties are a match made in heaven. While some decks command a suspicious amount of money, certain cards may make up for the cost.

We know that TCGs can bring in serious cash, but is that the case with these Warhammer 40K cards? In February of 2023, a PSA 10 Gem Mint example of Old One Eye sold for $51 at auction. That same month, a PSA 9 example of The Swarmlord sold for $35 on eBay after one bid. A PSA 10 Gem Mint example of $The Red Terror sold for $62 after 15 bids.

Warhammer 40K Comics

Of course, with any popular game, a comic book is almost always around. Marvel Comics' 2005 limited-run series, Marneus Calgar, can be found in all five issues for under $100 routinely on eBay. Graded copies of issue 1 in CGC blue label 9.8  have a one-year average of $75, making them a very inexpensive collectible.

Prices are stable for this series both graded and ungraded, and regularly pop up in auction. Other series such as Defenders of Ultamar and Sisters of Battle can all be had for a fairly affordable price. These are great at diving into the lore of Warhammer, and for people like me who are still getting their feet wet in the series, comics can be a great way to learn about the game.
