Media Release — A long time ago, in a galaxy not so far away, LucasFilm contacted Marvel Comics and licensed an official comic book adaptation of their soon-to-be-released film Star Wars. Writer Roy Thomas, penciler Howard Chaykin and inker Steve Leialoha adapted the film over the course of the first six issues of the monthly comic, which went on to become one of Marvel’s biggest hits of the 1970s. Marvel continued to publish the ongoing adventures of Luke Skywalker Han Solo and friends until 1986.
On Tuesday, May 15, the Cartoon Art Museum welcomes Howard Chaykin and Steve Leialoha for a special presentation on the origins of the Star Wars comic book and their experiences in creating the official Marvel Comics adaptation of the film. What was it like seeing the film for the first time? When did they realize that Star Wars was a hit? How involved was LucasFilm in the comic books? Learn the answers to these questions and more during our Star Wars Anniversary Celebration.
Comedian, cartoonist and longtime Star Wars fan Michael Capozzola will moderate the discussion, and Also appearing with Chaykin and Leialoha is acclaimed comedian Joe Klocek will conduct a special Star Wars Q&A following the presentation.
