In honor of Captain America’s fighting prowess, which on occasion has been directed at friend and foe alike; here we look at a few comic books that featured covers with Captain America fighting with his fellow heroes. While it was entertaining to see some of the matchups play out on the silver screen, it’s unfortunate that the others may remain missed opportunities.

TALES OF SUSPENSE #58 (1964)

Below are sales for the book: on the higher end, CGC 8.5/9.0 (the top 18.9/12.9%); the lower end CGC 6.5/7.0 (top 54.8/44.6%).

Outside of the occasional higher-priced Buy It Nows, the overall sales prices for Tales of Suspense #58 have been trending flat to very slightly up since 2012. For a book featuring a fight between two of MCU’s largest heroes and the scenario playing out in the 2016 Captain America: Civil War movie, it can be especially disheartening to see value barely move. With the duo’s apparent reduced exposure in the MCU future, any further upward pressure doesn’t appear to be on the horizon.

Another key aspect of the book other than the heroic matchup is that it contains the 2nd appearance of Kraven. Books with 2nd appearances of characters have shown to benefit from the live-action introduction of said character; but those typically contain the character on the cover, such as the Punisher’s Amazing Spider-Man #135.

DAREDEVIL #43 (1968)

Sales data for Daredevil #43, graded CGC 9.4 and 9.0 (the top 26.7% and 55.2%):

Daredevil #43’s sales prices have been on a slight upward trend since 2011, with a few notable higher-priced sales for the higher-end grade in 2014-15. This volatility seems to be ever-present on the higher end, as sales prices for it experienced a short term spike in early 2019.

TALES OF SUSPENSE #98 (1968)

A wider-range of CGC grades 9.4/9.2/8.5 are shown below; representing the top 20.4/31.5/57.9% of the census.

Since 2012, sales prices for Tales of Suspense #98 have been trending upward. One point of concern is the recent downward movement of the higher 9.4 grade. Coincidentally, this downward turn in Tales of Suspense #98’s 9.4 grade is almost a perfect mirror of the upward turn in the above Daredevil #43’s 9.4 grade. Over the next few months, it would be necessary to keep a close eye on this; whether it can find support or possibly even affect the sales prices of the lower grades.

CAPTAIN AMERICA ANNUAL #8 (1985)

With a large 20.2% of the CGC census occupying the 9.8 grade, only the 9.8 sales are shown below.

Interestingly, of the books examined in this article, the one with the most consistent growth in market value is the Bronze Age one. At least for the CGC 9.8 grade of Captain America Annual #8, sales prices have been on a slow climb upward. Sales volume did decrease in 2016, but returned to a higher volume in 2017 and resumed its slow upward growth.
