Let's discuss three DC Silver Age keys that have dipped in value over the past three years. In some grades, some of these keys have even entered correction territory. Since they're still major keys, they aren't inexpensive; however, they're blue chip stocks that present good investment opportunities.

Buying the dip is hard to do in this hot comic book market.  Personally, I recommend waiting until market demand drops once people begin spending their discretionary dollars on travel, vacations, going to baseball games, etc. instead of on stay-at-home hobbies. But for those of us who are looking to buy now, the best place to look for good deals is DC. Even though DC is on a bit of a hot streak with Zack Snyder's Justice League and a promising trailer for The Suicide Squad, Marvel is still sucking most of the oxygen out of the room.

Action Comics #252: 1st Appearance of Supergirl

Action Comics #252Silver Age Action Comics 252 contains the first appearance of Supergirl. In some grades, this early Silver Age key has essentially entered a bear market. For example, the value of a CGC 7.0 copy of this book has lost nearly 30% of its value during the past three years. Consider the following example. Just over three years ago, one buyer purchased a 7.0 for $7,100 on eBay. Just a few months ago, another purchased a 7.0 for only $3,720 on Heritage.

That still isn't cheap. But, if you have the money, picking up a 7.0 for under $4,000 could be a smart investment. We already know that Supergirl will appear in the Flash movie in 2022 and it's only a matter of time before Supergirl receives her own movie. And, once she does, this book could easily return to 2018-levels.

Aquaman #11: 1st Appearance of Mera

Aquaman 11: Silver Age

Aquaman #11 contains the first appearance of Mera. In many grades, this Silver Age key is also experiencing a major correction. For example, the value of a CGC 7.5 copy of this book has lost over 20% of its value during the past three years. Consider this example. In late 2018, one buyer purchased a 7.5 for $1,400 on eBay. Back in July 2020, another buyer purchased a 7.5 on eBay for only $650.

Importantly, we know Mera will return in Aquaman 2. In addition, if Warner Bros. decides to provide Zack Snyder the opportunity to complete his sequel to Justice League, we know Mera would plays an important role in that film based upon her appearance in the Knightmare future that appears at the end of the Snyder Cut. Considering that Mera will play a major role in future DCEU films, this book appears to be surprisingly undervalued.

Detective Comics #359: 1st Appearance of Batgirl

Detective Comics #359 contains the first appearance of Batgirl. Although this Silver Age key has experienced a dip in value in some grades, its decline has been less precipitous than Action Comics #252 and Aquaman #11. For instance, a CGC 8.0 copy of this book has lost just over 9% of its value during the past three years. While not as steep a drop as the other two comics discussed in this blog, that is still near correction territory for that grade.

Like Supergirl, I think it's only a matter of time before Batgirl receives her own big-budget movie or HBOMax series. And once she does, her first appearance could return to 2018-levels.
