Although James Gunn debunked a recent Wonder Woman rumor, it’s what he didn’t say that is giving hope to Snyder-verse fans.

What exactly is happening with the DCU is anyone’s guess. Already, James Gunn is proving that he is not simply following the Kevin Feige method when it comes to not only building a cohesive sandbox for all his action figures, but he’s also taking a hands-on approach to public relations.

It’s only been two months since Gunn and producer Peter Safran were handed the keys to the DC kingdom. When they renamed the DCEU, changing it to the DCU, along with christening the production wing DC Studios, it seemed they were making good on the speculation that their jobs were to clone Marvel and the MCU. As we’re gradually seeing, that’s not the case. While Feige generally stays quiet outside of occasional interviews and big reveals at major events, Gunn has turned Twitter into his playground.

Besides serving as his own PR firm and dropping teases left and right, Gunn has been utilizing social media to quell the infinite rumors that have surrounded his every breath. Much of these have centered on the beloved 2017 Justice League cast (minus Ezra Miller, that is). While the movie may have been a disaster, there’s no denying Zack Snyder did an excellent job putting the right actors into the roles. Soon after Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson gave us Cavill in a Superman cameo for Black Adam, word spread that Man of Steel 2 (and possibly 3) was in the works. Snyder-verse fans rejoiced, proclaiming the DCEU was alive and well after all. Then came Gunn’s heartbreaking news.

The day Gunn and Safran announced that they were looking to tell a Superman story with a younger lead, they created an entire legion of vocal detractors. From there on out, the Snyder faithful professed the Gunn-verse was doomed to fail in even more epic fashion than Justice League. Since then, he has been taking to Twitter more frequently to debunk rumors and false reports.

The latest came from Variety, who reported that Gunn and Safran had no plans to use Wonder Woman in their three-year plan. For one, Gunn corrected the publication, saying his and Safran were mapping out the next eight to 10 years, not three. Secondly, he made it clear Wonder Woman is indeed going to appear in the early days of his DCU vision.

Since he debunked those two important points, it sheds doubt on the entire report. However, he didn’t address two things brought up by Variety, and it’s what he didn’t say that could have the most intrigue. First, there is the rumor that Ezra Miller will remain as Barry Allen past the upcoming The Flash movie. Interestingly enough, Variety also noted that Gunn isn’t planning a full DCEU/DCU reboot, but rather a refresh that wouldn’t necessarily hit the reset button on the entire shared universe.

Considering that Gunn didn’t mention either of those two claims in his tweet along with his previous assertion that Gadot hadn’t been “booted” from Wonder Woman, it’s leading to speculation that the Snyder-verse JL crew may be part of the new DCU after all. Of course, that has given Cavill’s fans hope that he could return to the role in a few years. Both he and Gunn have made it clear that he will not be Superman for the upcoming movie, but now there’s reason to wonder if he may return at a later date.

Whatever Gunn has cooking is a mystery, so take all of this for what it is: pure speculation. At the least, it’s given all of the DC fandom reason to be excited, something that has been missing for several years now. That’s a win in itself.
