Birds of PreyThe latest info on the movie: Birds of Prey is anecdotal. I simply pulled up reservations online for the theater I attend near my house. I went on one of their movie websites to check on the status. There are currently eleven seats taken less than an hour from curtain drop, ELEVEN! Yep, Birds are being blown out of the sky by, wait for it: their own fans! Some astute speculators might have read my earlier blog where I warned this would happen and to sell prior to the movie. To those readers, I say, "Bravo Zulu!" Bottom line, as I predicted many moons ago, Birds of Prey are crashing to Earth.

It might have been the overly simplistic "misogynistic male stereotypes" throughout the movie, that turned off fans (source: paraphrasing Nerdtronic). Perhaps, it is the in your face add-on suggestive title that can't put butts in seats "And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn." Worse yet, it could just be these characters do not represent their comic counterparts, not one witt. In my humble speculator opinion, fans are very forgiving. But one thing they won't put up with is if the characters don't resemble their comic book counterparts. Now, that the movie has cratered; what do you do with all these comics? Can you say, "fire-sale" folks?

Birds of PreyBirds of Prey #1

This comic book was created at the end of the fabulous 1990s. Not the best era for comic speculators but some truly creative people brought girl-power teams to DC and elsewhere. This comic book was created by Chuck Dixon (script) and Greg Land with Brian Stelfreeze (art). They created a fun series, that ended up getting its own movie eventually. But has this book paid off long-term? Let's pluck a few feathers and see if we can discern the truth.

Birds of PreyLong-Term

  • Grade 9.8 $100 last sale returns positive +35%
  • Grade 9.6 $36 last sale 8-1-19 returns negative -43%
  • Grade 9.0  $24 last sale 5-27-19 returns N/A

Note of caution, these numbers do not represent the impact of a bad movie. I expect the prices to fall to rock bottom and that will be the time to scoop up someone else's mistake on the cheap. For now, if you own, try to sell it at a discount and move it before others start flooding eBay. You probably have about a week before the bad news has circled the globe twice.

Birds of Prey - Batman #386Batman #386

The first appearance of Black Mask was in Batman #386. It was created by Doug Moench (script) and Tom Mandrake (pencils) in 1985. This character kind of reminds me of the old villains of the Golden Age. Simple, straightforward and in some ways very scary. Played by Ewan McGregor, I am sure the Black Mask tried his darndest to save this flailing enterprise. If you can still sell this book do. If not, then you own it for the foreseeable future. I think we could see the Black Mask again (as long as they don't kill him off) as he would make an interesting villain for Batman, which is probably why his first appearance was in Batman #386.

Conclusion:

All things Birds of Prey are doomed at this point. The earliest numbers have it competing with the opening weekend for Jonah Hex. Therefore, four of the hottest birds can barely compete with a mutilated, half-dead, mystical Confederate soldier. Yeah, reload your ammo, this was a huge misfire to be compared with Hex. Sell your Birds of Prey asap, before you end up being the prey of contrary-speculators.
