2021 is already here and the madness cannot get here fast enough for Marvel Studios. Disney+, Marvel's streaming platform, will connect their tv shows with the movie universe. The first critical Marvel show premiering on the platform is WandaVision. WandaVision is set to premiere on January 15, 2021, and the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is about to begin. One interesting development that Marvel is emphasizing is diversity. Specifically, the wheels are in motion already to introduce more female characters in their shows and movies. Below is one prominent character that could play an important part in Marvel going future. In this article, we'll discuss what may happen with Monica Rambeau.

IT ALL STARTS WITH A VISION

WandaVision will kick things off for Marvel in 2021 with the hopes of giving more clarity to phase four. One character that could have a prominent future in the MCU is Monica Rambeau. Rambeau first appeared in the MCU as a child during the first live-action Captain Marvel film in 2019. Due to the events of the "Thanos Snap" and fast-forwarding to the present timeline in WandaVision, Monica is now cast as an adult character.

Marvel can use Rambeau in a variety of ways. Firstly, she is in a good position to be shaped into any kind of hero they want her to become. Online trailers depict her as an agent of S.W.O.R.D (Sentient World Observation and Response Department.) S.W.O.R.D is an intelligence agency that deals with alien threats to world security. The agency is considered a division of the organization Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistics (S.H.I.E.L.D,) lead by Nick Fury. As a result, a couple of things come to mind with S.W.O.R.D that pertain to Monica. The debut of S.W.O.R.D. means more threats could be coming from a cosmic and alien level that this team specializes in.

THE MANY NAMES OF MONICA

In the comics, Monica has many superhero aliases throughout her existence. Rumors of fans and their displeasure of Brie Larson as Captain Marvel could push Rambeau into that role. As a result, this means Monica could become Captain Marvel in the near future. Amazing Spider-Man Annual #16 is the first appearance of Monica Rambeau as Captain Marvel. Recently, this issue has been spiking to these rumors. If this does not take place, Rambeau could take another hero alias in the comics known as Photon. One clue about this rumor is shown in a scene during the Captain Marvel movie. The clue refers to a notion that comes from her mother, Maria Rambeau. In the movie, her mother's codename is Photon during her time as an Air Force pilot. Eventually, Avengers Unplugged #5 would be the issue where she first becomes the hero Photon.

WITH GREAT POWER...

In addition to Rambeau being an agent of S.W.O.R.D, she is also and a woman with powers. Her powers include the ability to change herself into any form of energy. The different forms of energy include cosmic rays, X-rays, and gamma radiation. She also has the ability to fly and can release energy blasts. It remains to be seen if the MCU will provide her with similar powers in the comics.

TO WRAP IT UP

Lastly, Monica fits in nicely with the MCU due to her connections with other notable heroes. She has joined the Avengers team in the past and part of the Ultimates team with the likes of Blue Marvel, Captain Marvel, Ms. America, and Black Panther. Avengers #227 is the issue when Monica Rambeau joins the Avengers. Be sure to keep an eye out for it.
