Amazing Spider-Man #300Amazing Spider-Man #300 is the clear winner for the most popular book of the Copper Age. It is not necessarily the most expensive, but it is beyond doubt the King of the Copper Age. This monarch has established it is bonafide and consistently comes out on top in all popularity matchups. It seems this Todd McFarlane machination has become the dominant Copper Age book.

This beast has slain many mythical monsters. It has devoured the myth of Modern Age and Copper Age books not being worthy as investments.  It has torn limb from limb the concept of too many published and therefore not worthy of purchase or speculation. What size of returns has this popular member of the aristocracy given to investors? Has the last year been a good year for  Amazing Spider-Man #300? How has this newly minted king faired during the era of Covid-19?

Amazing Spider-Man #300

This King of Copper has the first "full appearance of Venom; the first issue inked by Todd McFarlane and is Spider-Man's 25th Anniversary issue." It was created in 1988 with a script by David Michelinie with pencils and inks by Todd McFarlane. One key metric I use is the distribution of returns across all grades. For this comic book the distribution is massive and across the board with near mint plus to mint grade 9.8 returning positive +43% and 6.5 grade at positive +48% even the low grades of 4.5 at nearly positive +25%! It is green across the board, just like a green light in traffic.

Breaching $4000!

In the first part of the year of COVID-19 (on 1/4/20) this book sold for $2049. That same book crossed the $4000 range in June of the same year. Yep, someone overpaid substantially for this book. But fear not, within 4 months that person had actually made money on this $4000 purchase. That is the kind of market we find ourselves in, let's call it a buyer's market.

Long-Term Returns (720 days)

The returns are even higher going out two-plus years with grade 9.8 paying off to the tune of positive +144%, grade 8.0 at positive +117%, and grade 5.0 at positive +46% and I could go on. These grades and their corresponding returns are throughout the spectrum, both up and down the range with every grade participating in above-average one-year and two-year returns. This along with the rapidly advancing top-grade price of 9.8 leads to one and only one conclusion. Amazing  Spider-Man #300 is the reigning King of the Copper Age.

Amazing Spider-Man CellConclusion

This Copper King is something to behold. I know of two people who are probably ecstatic over the ramp-up in the price for this incredibly common copper key. They both bet heavily on this book, one with as many as 20 plus copies.

In addition, this book has a future catalyst with Venom 2 set to come out in June of 2021. This movie will definitely drive the price of this book even higher. Can you imagine what that hype will do to the already existing price spike? Time to load up on a couple more of these beauties. At least, while it is still attainable in some grades. Then after Venom 2 perhaps sell and wait to rebuy at an opportune time.  This book is King of the Copper Age, and long may it reign.
