Speculators, now that Kang has been confirmed as the villain in the upcoming Ant-Man / Wasp movie, it is far too late to snatch up his key issues as bargains.  However, a villain is only as good as his backstory.  Kang's backstory revolves around his doomed love for the Princess Ravonna, also known as Terminatrix!  Let's take a look at this Avengers and Fantastic Four foe who certainly deserves an MCU appearance alongside the time-traveling Kang.

For the Love of a Princess...

In the 40th century, the warlord Kang has conquered all of the earth except for the tiny kingdom of King Carelius.  As he readies to destroy the kingdom, Carelius sends his daughter, Ravonna, to meet with Kang.  The beautiful, young princess laughs in the face of Kang's braggadocio, stating that they would fight to the death rather than submit to his rule.  Impressed by her bravery, Kang chooses to spare her kingdom and to expand his kingdom into space (as told in Avengers #23).

After conquering all of known space Kang returns, demanding Ravonna's hand in marriage to spare her kingdom.  Ravonna rejects him.  Despite his anger and disappointment, Kang leaves the kingdom unravaged and returns to space.

Years later Kang returns again.  This time, in an effort to impress her with his might, he brings the historically famous Avengers forward in time so he can defeat them in front of her.  The Avengers stand alongside Ravonna's small forces but are quickly overwhelmed.  However, by Kang's own rules, all conquered monarchs must be slain to help stem future rebellions.  Refusing to do so, his own generals turn on Kang.  With the Avengers and Ravonna's help, Kang defeats his generals.  Kang's actions show Ravonna a different side of the warlord.  When a defeated general fires a weapon at Kang, Ravonna leaps in front of it.  She saves Kang, but she is comatose and is placed in a stasis tube as she barely clings to life.  In despair, Kang sends the Avengers back to their own time (in Avengers #24).

A Woman Scorned...

While Kang genuinely mourned for Ravonna, his feelings for her could not overcome his hatred for the Avengers.  In his first-ever appearance, the Cosmic Elder Grandmaster challenges Kang to a contest in the classic Avengers #69, #70, and #71.  The Grandmaster chose the Avengers as his champions, while Kang chose the Squadron Sinister.  Not only do these issues introduce Grandmaster, but they also mark the first appearance of the Squadron Sinister - a semi-direct copy of DC's Justice League.

A classic battle ensues between the Avengers and the Justice League - oops, I mean the Squadron Supreme.  Despite his team losing, a technicality allows Grandmaster to offer Kang the choice of reviving Ravonna or destroying the Avengers.  In anger, Kang chooses the Avengers.  Fortunately, with the assistance of the Black Knight, Kang is thwarted.

We later learn that Grandmaster revives Ravonna anyway, and informs her about Kang's betrayal, setting her on the path to becoming Terminatrix.

The Confusing Council of Kangs...

Ravonna disguises herself as Nebula and infiltrates the Council of Kangs.  The Council of Kangs is a group made up of alternate versions of the time-traveling villain.  I love time travel stories.  However, I had a hard time wrapping my head around this story that ran through the Avengers and Fantastic Four in the late 1980s.  The tale culminates in Avengers Annual #21 where, fittingly, history repeats itself this time with Kang sacrificing himself to save Ravonna.

The Terminatrix Objective...

In the Avengers: Terminatrix Objective mini-series we see that Ravonna (now using the name Terminatrix) is ruling Kang's kingdom of Chronopolis.  In an interesting twist the big three Avengers (Thor, Iron Man, and Captain America) face off against their 90's counterparts (Thunderstrike, War Machine, and US Agent).  They soon discover a bigger time-traveling threat behind the scenes.  Terminatrix, the Avengers, and a revived Kang stand together to defeat the threat.

Kang invites Ravonna to rule Chronopolis alongside him.  As they hug, Ravonna shockingly stabs Kang, placing him back into his comatose state.  She then opts to travel back to the 1800s in Timely, Wisconsin, to join with the Kang of that era.  While any "timelines" for time travelers like Kang and Ravonna are constantly in flux, Ravonna's ties to Kang remain consistent.

I worry a bit about how a top Avengers foe like Kang will be used in the upcoming Ant-Man movie.  I've enjoyed the movies,  but tend to see them more as comedy relief.  I hope Kang is envisioned on the big screen with the grandeur he deserves.  If he is, then I believe Ravonna/Terminatrix will have an important role in helping define him.  If not, Kang's time-traveling soul-mate may remain Almost Infamous.
