Each week, GoCollect updates its Hottest Comics List. We know which ones jumped the most. So, now it's time to speculate on why.

Before we jump in, I want to explain what this list is. It's not the top valued or even the highest FMV. It's created by tracking the number of graded comics. The more that get sold, the higher in the list it goes. So when I talk about the biggest movers and losers - I'm referring to the ones that have jumped up the list the most (movers) and the ones that dropped the most (losers) within the top 100 spots. First, let's talk about the overall top 10 Hottest Comics. If you like this, check out last week's.

Hottest Comics Top 10

The * notes those that weren't in the top ten last week. The biggest mover in the top 10 was Wolverine #1 which climbed up 23 places to land in the 7th spot.
Now that we looked at the top ten, let's look at the top 100 and see which were the biggest movers.

Hottest Comics Biggest Movers

Oblivious Song

Hottest Comics

Oblivion Song #1 climbed the most in the previous week. Moving up 927 spots to land on 73. This comic came out recently, March of 2018. This issue is the cheapest investment on this list. A 9.8 has an FMV of only $46 right now. Within the past week, 9 copies have sold compared to the whole month at 13. The most someone paid was a 9.8 that went for $75.83. That copy was sold on eBay and most likely went so much over the FMV value due to the high demand that increased the bids. There are correctly 3 grades on the CGC census with any "real" numbers (above 10). Those being 9.8, 9.6, and 9.4. Those three grades make up 848 of the 856 on the census. The values for the 9.8 and 9.4 have increased while the 9.6 has decreased.

Moving on to the why. Back in 2019, we got the announcement that we were getting an Oblivion Song movie. Then we kind of got crickets for a while. Then, Robert Kirkman spoke at the ComicCon online. Here is what Kirkman had to say about the movie.

"The movie is still very much in development," he said. "I'm reviewing things and getting things in order, and progress is being made. Hopefully, there'll be news very soon."

Again, this came out at the ComicCon at Home that happened between the dates of July 22-25. The article linked above came out on the 24th. Most of the sales for this comic were finalized on the 24th. My guess is that people heard that there are still plans in effect for this movie and decided to snag this issue early.

Amazing Spider-Man

Hottest Comics

Next up is Amazing Spider-Man #136 that climbed 922 spots to land in spot 78. For the month of July, 14 copies have sold. In June a whopping 3 sold for the whole month. The most notable one would be a 9.6 Signature Label that sold for $799 on eBay through an auction. There are a total of 1,481 graded copies on the CGC census. Only 76 are 9.8's and the most common grade is 9.4 with 250 copies. The values for this issue are a bit opposite to what you like to see. Of the 10 grades with enough data to track, 6 values decreased whereas only 4 increased. 9.0 increased by 41% and the most notable decrease was a 7.0 that went down by 21.9%. So more people are purchasing, but the prices have been decreasing.

I can't find much on this one. Other than this article talking about Amazing Spider-Man #850’s preview. You can see the Green Goblin storyline being brought back. That’s really all that I could find. I'm pretty sure this issue has been in the top 5 before and I didn't have answers then either. Please let me know if YOU know why this comic is jumping the charts.

Amazing Spider-Man Again

Hottest Comics

Another Spider-Man, this time Amazing Spider-Man #606 moved up 845 placed to be in spot 95 in the top 100. Twice as many graded copies have sold this month. 14 this month with only 7 last month. The highest someone paid was $135 for a 9.8 which is still below the current FMV of $150. There are 1,101 graded copies in the CGC census with the most common grade is a 9.8 with 499 copies. This isn't too surprising as this is a modern comic that was released in 2009. Of all the grades with enough data, all have increased in value. Most notably was 9.2 which increased 150%.

What I could find with this one is that Black Cat, featured on the cover, has come back to life in the 4th installment of the modern run titled: Marvel's Spider-Man: The Black Cat Strikes. After seemingly dying in an explosion in the third book, The Black Cat Strikes #4 shows that the Black Cat hadn't run out of lives yet. This issue will be released on August 5th. I'm not too sure on this one - but maybe people are liking this series and are hoping for the Black Cat to make it to the big screen so they grabbed this issue? It's not her first appearance, but a great cover. Afterall, it’s an iconic J. Scott Campbell Spidey cover.

The other thing that was out there - though dated a bit far, but could have contributed was this article which talks about Black Cat. Gina Prince Bythewood mentions that her plans are to begin the process soon of bringing both Black Cat & Sable into the MCU and on the screen. What are your thoughts? What did I miss?

Watchmen

Hottest Comics

Watchmen #1 climbed up 770 spots to land in spot 52. There were 7 sold in the previous week compared to the 3-5 for the other weeks. The highest someone paid was $550 for a 9.8 which is right on par with the FMV at $525. There are 3,403 copies in the CGC census with 524 being a 9.8. The most common grade in the census is 9.6 with 1,062. The values were a bit of a mixed bag with 4 of the 7 increasing while 3  decreased. The 9.8 increased the most by 14% while the 8.0 decreased by 17.7%.

Watchmen #1 does have quite a lineup for first appearances with Rorschach, Adrian Veidt, Doctor Manhattan, Daniel Dreiberg, Edward Blake, Hollis Mason. and Laurel Juspeczyk. Though I don't think that has anything to do with why this book started jumping in sales. The Emmy nominations list was announced not too long ago and guess who is leading the charts? The Watchmen series has 26 nominations - the most of any other nominated show. The runner up had 20. With the outstanding success of the show, they have become the talk of the town. Many articles have come out since to explain why the show is so timely now, and others are pushing for a season two. I haven't checked this series out yet - have you? What are your thoughts on their line up of nominations?

Spawn

Hottest Comics

Finally, Spawn #1 (Newsstand Edition) moved up 737 spots to be in spot number 89. 7 copies sold in the previous week where 7 had sold for the previous 3 weeks total. The most interesting bit is that the three highest valued sold were all $649.99 signature labels. These were sold on consecutive days on eBay with a fixed price and signed by Todd McFarlane. There are a whopping 15,039 copies on the CGC census. A measly 6 of those are 10.0 whereas the most common grade being a 9.8 with 8,178 copies.

As mentioned earlier, the virtual Comic-Con happened last week. Spawn creator Todd Mcfarlane mentioned creating this movie a while back and was asked to provide an update. Here is what he had to say.

"We are in the process of adding, I think, not only a home run but potentially a grand slam to our movie. I'm not saying that as a teaser. I'm saying that legitimately. It's happening. It's happening right now. It's just that the business of Hollywood has its sort of ebb and flow... They seem to be a little bit shy about wanting to be public about all of this. So, all I can say is that the movie is going full-steam ahead. I know I've said it before. I'm telling you, it's going full-steam ahead in terms of news that hopefully you and I will be able to break fairly soon."

This is exciting news! Are you excited about this film?
