2019 was a fairly crazy year to be a speculator.  For those that found success, congratulations!  To those still hoping for success, the new year is almost upon us!  I am a fan of checking out the data to ensure that you are making rational decisions moving forward.  Let's take a look back at the big market movements of 2019 and see how we can coast into 2020!

To me, the biggest story of 2019 was Spider-Man...I mean did you seen the gains Amazing Spider-Man #1 got?! Wait, that is every year!  His story wasn't big because of his contributions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) but more so for the spat between Marvel and Sony over his rights.  Far From Home left us wanting to know what was next.  And as sad as it was to lose Spidey from the MCU, I am actually excited that Sony is going to have the opportunity to make sense of whatever they are trying to do with Venom, Morbius, and the like.  Looks like Sony is left to pivot and discover a Spider-Man of their own.

Shang-Chi had an excellent 2019 and his first appearance book got a much-deserved boost in value.  The upcoming movie should be an interesting departure from traditional Marvel offerings and hopefully provide us with a top-quality Mandarin, as the villain.  I am also left wondering if we will somehow be treated to Fin Fang Foom...I'd trade that entire concept for the Black Widow movie.

It seemed to be a great year for everything Captain Marvel.  Her solo movie was successful, she saved the day against Thanos, but now it seems like she is going to disappear for a while.  The whole phenomenon feels to me a bit like when your significant other tries to change your diet to something weird, you are supportive but know it's just going to be a fad.  Was Captain Marvel a fad?  Is Marvel going to capitalize or were we just given a classic Disney test run to see if they could merchandise her?  Only time will tell.

One of the better movies of the year was actually from DC, which is a bit weird and uncomfortable for me to say.  Shazam! was fun, different, and should hopefully set up for some better sequels over the next few years.  It seems like the Justice League is gone and there is a new focus for the DC lineup moving forward.  I guess officially getting rid of Affleck was good just to stop the media machine, but is the new kid any better?  Who wants an angsty vampire hipster as Batman?  I am starting to see why DC is falling behind Marvel in the cinema department.

To me, 2019 is the year I will probably move on from Modern Era comics.  Too many variants, too many high grades in the census, and too many heartaches ready to happen.  There was some success for Cosmic Ghost Rider and Miles Morales, but as a grouping, modern comics are too unpredictable, too saturated on the market, and mostly irrelevant to the graded comic market.  2020 is the year I stay away...though I do still love the prospects of Sentry, Riri Williams, and Gwenpool, if you are going to focus on the modern stuff.
