Star Wars is currently at its highest peak in the comic book world. Clone Wars, The Mandalorian, and Legends are all driving up the desire for anything Star Wars related, especially comics. When it comes to that universe in comics, there are two different storylines: Canon and Legends. Canon is what we have seen on the big screen and part of the official universe timeline. The Legends timeline is an expanded universe that features stories outside of the movies, TV shows, and current canon comics and not currently official to the Star Wars Canon timeline.

In this article, I will list 15 Star Wars comics that I believe are “must haves” for Star Wars collectors. There are easily over 50 Star Wars comics that are worth chasing, but I will be going over what I believe to be the top 15 SW comics to collect.

15. Darth Vader #3 (Marvel, 2015)

This is a comic that came out a few years ago and has been gaining some heat this year. This issue features the 1st appearance of Doctor Aphra. Aphra is a fan favorite for a lot of Star Wars comics readers, and even has her own comic series. Could we see her in a movie or animated series? It’s highly likely.

14. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic #42 (Dark Horse, 2009)

Revan will appear multiple times in this list. If you have played the Star Wars Old Republic & Knights of the Old Republic video games, you should be very familiar with Malak and Revan. This issue is the 1st appearance and origin of Darth Revan, with mask and outfit. So, it seems that Revan has three 1st appearances or cameos in the Dark Horse series, which you’ll see in this list, and all are worth picking up.

13. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic #9 (Dark Horse, 2006)

This is considered the 1st appearance of Revan, prior to becoming a Sith lord, though he does not appear in his costume.

12. Star Wars Tales #24(Dark Horse, 2005)

Another major 1st appearance in the Star Wars legends storyline. 1st appearance of Darth Nihilus, a super powerful Sith lord that rivaled the power of Emperor Palpatine. There is also a Darth Maul variant cover to this issue that is cool looking.

11. Star Wars Tales #23 (Dark Horse, 2005)

Not a very memorable cover, but certainly a very important 1st appearance in cameo of Darth Malak & Revan, two of the most popular characters to come out of the Legends timeline.

10. Star Wars Tales #9 (Dark Horse, 2001)

Star WarsHave you ever wondered what a duel between Darth Vader and Darth Maul would be like on screen? This is as close as it gets as Vader is challenged by a Darth Maul clone of some kind. It is not the real Darth Maul but an identical copycat. This whole setup is to prove that Vader can defeat powerful enemies by the hands of the Emperor.

9. Star Wars: Heir to the Empire #1 (Dark Horse, 1995)

Star WarsThese Dark Horse comics keep blowing up! This introduces the 1st appearance of Admiral Thrawn. Thrawn was originally a character from the Legends timeline with a different origin and then suddenly brought into the canon timeline with his appearance in the Rebels show.

8. Kanan: Last Padawan #6 (Marvel, 2015)

A year after the Star Wars: Rebels show was released, Marvel released a 12-issue series based on Kanan Jarrus. Issue 6 is being considered the 1st full appearance of Sabine Wren and Ezra Bridger, two fan favorite characters from the show.

7. Star Wars: The Clone Wars #1(Dark Horse, 2008)

Star WarsPrior to the release of the Clone Wars TV show in 2008, Dark Horse put out a Clone Wars series that premiered one month before the show’s release. The first issue features the 1st appearance of Ahsoka Tano and Captain Rex, two very important characters that play big roles in the Clone Wars and in the next TV show, Rebels.

6. Star Wars: Darth Maul - Son of Dathomir #1 (Dark Horse, 2014)

Star WarsIf you watched the Clone Wars series and saw Maul defeated by Sidious and wondered what happened to him, this 4-issue series tells you exactly what happens when Maul was captured. This series is part of the Star Wars Canon timeline, as well as the last Star Wars series published by Dark Horse. This was a very low print run and are tough to come across. This is also the 1st appearance of the Darksaber, which appears in Clone Wars, Rebels, and The Mandalorian.

5. Star Wars #107 (Marvel, 1986)

Star WarsThe final issue of a what seemed like a never-ending story, with lower print runs toward the end of the series. Classic cover that features Lando, Chewy, Han, Leia, Luke, C-3PO, and R2-D2.

4. Star Wars #68 (Marvel, 1983)

Star WarsA great Boba Fett cover! This issue features the origin of Boba Fett, and well as the first time that Mandalorians are mentioned.

3. Star Wars #42 (Marvel, 1980)

Star WarsThis comic features the 1st appearance of everyone’s favorite bounty hunter, Boba Fett! This issue also features 1st appearances of Yoda, Darth Sidious, and Bossk. Originally issues 39-44 were first printed into a Marvel Treasury for the Movie Adaptation of The Empire Strikes Back. There were 3 printings to those treasuries. All of which pre-dated the release of Star Wars 42, so technically Star Wars 42 is a 4th printing if you think about it.

2. Star Wars 1-4 35 Cent Variants (Marvel, 1977)

The more common Star Wars 1 has a 30-cent cover price, while this variant feature a 35-cent cover price. The 35-cent covers were produced as a marketing strategy for certain cities to see if customers would still buy them for a higher price. Star Wars 1-4 all have a 35-cent variant cover price, and those 35-cent variants are very sought after and can range anywhere from $200-$10k depending on the issue and condition.

1. Star Wars #1 (Marvel, 1977)

Star WarsThe comic that started it all! Written by Roy Thomas and illustrated by Howard Chaykin. This is an obvious one to be put first on the list. This comic features the 1st appearances of Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, C-3PO and R2-D2.

My name is Jackson Plyler, and I live in Weddington, North Carolina. Recently I graduated from Montreat College with a Business degree and had a tennis scholarship all 4 years there. I enjoy buying, selling, and trading in vintage comics, action figures, and art. I was born in 1997, so I was in diapers right when the Star Wars prequel trilogy hit theaters in 1999, and essentially grew up with the prequel trilogy. Almost every fan prefers the Original Trilogy over the others, but the Prequel Trilogy was always one that I never dissed on especially when the Clone Wars show was released.
